Catholic Saints Knowledge Base
Catholic Saints? I am doing a project, I need to relate my personal hero to a saint or Catholic hero. It's hard to do search engines on saints without having already known their name. I just need ideas of saints who have lost their families, children, personal strength, courage, integrity, or like my hero is a woman who came from laos to America and lost all he siblings and children. Does anyone have any sites? Or saint ideas?
How do you explain the superhuman powers of Catholic saints? Many saints have attributed abilities such as levitation, remote vision, and being at two places at once. Oddly, a few saints are said by the church to have no historical basis for their abilities or were faking, while also insisting other saints had the actual abilities described in their legends.
Why are the IMAGES OF THE CATHOLIC SAINTS looking always so sad? Every time I step inside a Catholic church I look first at the images of Jesus, the Virgin and the Saints. They all look so sad and lost in contemplation. Terrible thoughts must go through their minds because we can see the pain expressed on their faces. Why this environment of doom and gloom? One feels almost guilty of not feeling guilty and sad. I was once a Catholic.
How does Catholic Intercession Prayers requesting Saints and Mary to help Work? I asked b4 but no one could answer. If catholics request the saints and mary for intercession and help us pray, why will they hear it because only God is omnipotent? So logically, they cant hear us because only God can know every prayer and not the saints. So, if they cant hear our requests, how can they then pray for us?

In practice, how are Catholic Saints different from Pagan Gods? Catholics worship one God, but pray to different patron Saints for specific needs. Within the greater mysteries of Paganism is a belief in a divine spirit, but they worship many Gods as specific aspects. In both cases the motivation seems to be to focus the spiritual energy for a specific purpose. So, other than the arogant belief that one system is superior over the other, is there a substantial difference between the two? Please don't tell me that it's because thePagan Gods don't exist, or that the Catholic God doesn't exist unless you can offer some meaningful proof to back up your claim, and it is relevant to your answer. I am truly looking for a deep and meaningful understanding of the difference between the two systems. Although I imagine that this is a new concept for many of you which I do hope that you contemplate, that does not negate the fact that I am looking for a real answer from someone who has contemplated these issues before. So please do not leave flippant answers. Daver's answer just really made me laugh. He expressed that I'm not really looking for understanding while his mind remained closed to any theological possibility other than his own. He makes a good point about intercessory prayer, but others made the same point without being so insulting of the Pagan belief system.
Don´t you think catholic saints were sinners of a kind much worse than almost everybody else? The catholic saints, for all the centuries of the Roman Catholicism, spoke viciously against us, homosexuals and bisexuals. They always put themselves as models of love, forgiveness, and humility. But most of them were completely different from this. Their words full of hate against us, their incapacity to forgive us for what the used to see as sins, and their lack of humility when they spoke against us is a proof of how they didn´t know any love, forgiveness, or humility in their lives. I think very few people have been sinners of a worse kind than a catholic saint´s.
Does anyone know how many Catholic saints there are? I know a lot but, is there an actual number? Is there a site listing all of the saints their cause and day? I'm sorry. I was just told that there is a difference between saints and patron saints. Is that true?
Can somebody please help me understand the Catholic saints? My understanding is this, God sees these people as being exceptional, better than most others, and chooses to reward them with an eternity of indentured servitude, praying for other people who pray to them? What kind of a reward is that? An eternal job that doesn't pay?
why cant old testament figures become catholic saints? i mean they did heroic, brave, kind, wonderful things too right? they did great things too and are still part of the catholic faith! its not their fault they were born before jesus, they worshipped God as they knew Him so if they ARE saints like some of you are saying, then why cant my confirmation name be Esther??? (as in the queen of Persia, not St. Esther the teacher)
Upon what is the Catholic idea of saints based on? The Catholic idea of saints is based upon all of Scripture and Tradition. The Communion of Saints After confessing "the holy catholic church" the Apostles Creed adds "the communion of saints." In a certain sense this article is a further explanation of the preceding: "What is the Church if not the assembly of all the saints?" The communion of saints is the Church. Since all the faithful form one body, the good of each is communicated to the others... We must therefore believe that there exists a communion of goods in the Church. But the most important member is Christ, since he is the head... Therefore, the riches of Christ are communicated to all the members, through the sacraments. As this Church is governed by one and the same Spirit, all the goods she has received necessarily become a common fund. (St Paul says we are one body, one body in Christ). The three states of the Church. "When the Lord comes in glory, and all his angels with him, death will be no more and all things will be subject to him. But at the present time some of his disciples are pilgrims on earth. Others haved died and are being purified, while still others are in glory, contemplating "in full light, God himself triune and one, exactly as he is": (Lumen Gentium of Vatican II): All of us, however, in varying degrees and in different ways share in the same charity towards God and our neighbors, and we all sing the one hymn of glory to our God. All, indeed who are of Christ and who have his Spirit form one Church and in Christ cleave together. Eph 4:16 Lumen Gentium So it is that the union of the wayfarers with the brethren who sleep (have died, but living with god) in the peace of Christ is in no way interrupted, but on the contrary, according to the constant faith of the Church, this union is reinforced by an exchange of spiritual goods." Lumen G. The intercession of Saints "Being more closely united to Christ, those who dwell in heaven fix the whole Church more firmly in holiness...Thye do not cease to intercede with the Father for us, as they proffer the merits which they acquired on earth through the one mediator between God and men, Christ Jesus. So by their fraternal concern is our weakness greatly helped.
Upon what is the idea of Catholic saints based in Scripture? Church as the Communion of Saints By the expression, the "Communion of Saints" we mean in the strict sense the union of all faithful on earth withChrist as their Head an with one another. In a wider sense, the expression signifies the unity under and in Christ as their Head of the faithful on earth (the Church militant), the souls in Purgatory (the Church suffering), and the blessed in heaven (the church Triumphant). In his priestly prayer Christ intimately links the members of His Church into a firm, spiritual unity (John 17: 9-26). His relation to His Apostles and true followers is similar to that of the vine, which He is, to its branches; just as the branches draw their life and nourishment from the vine, so His Apostles and all just souls must draw their spiritual life and nourishment from Him (John 15:1-11). By means of the Lord's Prayer, His disciples were to pray for one another and the Kingdom of God (Matt 6:9-13) Paul, in particular, has dilated upon this doctrine. Christ is the Head of the Mystical Body, His Church, and the faithful are the members of this Body. This Mystical Body is a social structure, a real mutual union, which is endowed with supernatural life (life that comes from within) and links the members of the Body with one another and the Head (Rom 12:4-6; 1 Cor 12:12-27) This intimate and close union of the faithful with Christ is compared with the pure union between husband and wife (Eph 5:22f). Being so intimately linked with one another and with Christ, the members must work together towards a single end, namely, for the continuous sanctification of the members of Christ's Body (1Cor 6:9-11;10,12f; 2 Cor 9,10; Eph 5:25-27; Rom 11,22) must pray for one another (Rom 15,30; 2Cor1,11; Eph 1,15f; 6,18f; Phil 1,19; Col 4,2f; 1 Thess 1,2;5,25;2 Thess 1,11; 3,1; Heb 13,18), must cooperate to profess externally the same faith (Rom 10,9; Acts 16,31). The Church as the Communion of Saints also includes the blessed in Heaven (Apoc (revelations) 6, 9-11; cf. Col 1, 20; Phil 2, 10) and the souls in purgatory (cf 2 Mach 12:43-46; Phil 2, 10). By reason of this doctrine of the Communion of Saints, the Church teaches us that the Saints in heaven bring the prayers of the faithful to God for us, and that it is good and useful for us to seek their intercession. Just as Christ speaks with great reverence and honor of Moses (Matt 23,2; Mark 7,10; John 5, 45f), David (Matt 22,42-450, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (matt 8,11; 22,32; Luke 16,22), so too the Apostles propose for out imitation the holy lives of Abraham (Rom 4, 1-25; Gal 3, 1-29), Noe (2 Pet 2,5), Job (Jas 5, 11), and many Old Testament persons renowned for their faith (Heb 11, 1-40). In the Apocalypse the 24 ancients or elders are described as offering the prayers of the saints or Christians on eath to God (Rev 5,8). Then too it is permissible and useful to venerate relics. Contact with the bones of Eliseus brought a man to life ( 4 Kings 13, 21), and in the New Testament it is related of Peter that his mere shadow cured the sick (Acts 5, 15) and of Paul that by means of handkerchiefs and aprons which he had worn extraordinary miracles were worked by God (Act 19,11f). Think about this also. At the Transfiguration 2 old testament figures appeared. The dead are not dead, they are said to be 'asleep' because they are not visible to us any longer. The scriptural phrase "asleep" is not death.
Did you hear about the new catholic curriculum in California public schools? The kids will be studying the Roman Catholic religion. As part of the lesson plans, they'll take the names of Catholic saints as is done in the Catholic Sacrament of Baptism. In addition, the youngsters will recite Catholic prayers in class and will read and memorize passages of the New Testament from the Catholic Bible. The boys and girls will also learn about the priesthood and the convent. They'll wear priest's clothing and the traditional gowns and headdresses of nuns. To better understand Catholic traditions, they'll stage mock confessions and Masses. To learn about the traditions of Lent, student's will ''give up'' some favored thing or food and they'll also fast to better understand that part of Catholic practice and ritual. You didn't hear it? Of course you didn't, because it's not true. What is true is the above curriculum was done with Islam, supported by the same liberal idiots that hate Christianity. Liberal insanity.
When did the Catholic Church, by ecumenical decision, cease to pray to saints? SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY PLEASE. I have been seeing some answers on here that deny the Catholics pray to saints. I was raised a Catholic and I know that in times past it was commmon to pray to Mary. There is a patron saint for lost things, for travel, for animals (pets), etc. You pray with the mention of Peter, "the first apostolic pope". The list could go on. I want to know when --- by decree -- the Catholic church quit praying to saints. Did this actually happen or is it something that has "gone underground". Don't give me the answer that you personally do not pray to saints. That is good if you don't, however we are talking about the "church organization" not the individuals. Why do you even try to communicate with them? They are Dead! Eccl 9: 5. For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. 6. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. angelsgurl ... you jsut typed a prayer to a saint... Don't telll me she is not a saint, because then it would mean you thought she was a god and that is bad.
